I am a person with various mental health issues and, therefore, have experienced multiple forms of stigma. From being told to stop being anxious to recognize that I have a roof over my head, there’s nothing to be depressed about. I have been told to just stop pulling my hair out. Many things about mental health do not get talked about enough or brought to others’ attention simply because we choose not to see it in others.
If we do not talk about mental health issues, those who need support and resources, usually through the government, will never receive it because we are not pushing to make it known and receive legislation that ensures access to these resources. We need enough people to vote from not only the federal level but all the way down to the local level for people who will fight for our mental health, among other rights that need to be brought to attention so that we may invoke change.
I used to think that I was failing at raising awareness because I was mainly reaching people within the mental health communities. Instead, I should have realized that I was still reaching people and that there was no reason to step back and be quieter. It just means I need to reach more than one audience online. I need to share with everyone what it means to have trichotillomania, depression, anxiety, and CPTSD. I need to share my story so that if people from other communities see it, they may also be more informed.
I plan to be more involved in all communities and discuss these issues more because they’re essential. I will also discuss the importance of voting soon because this is a dire time to commit to our country. I hope you will stick around to see more and discuss!
